Careers

“I’ve preferred and enjoyed a small law firm where partners, associates, paralegals and support personnel really know each other and even know each other’s families. If I’m with a large national firm and have three hundred partners in six cities, people relate to each other as statistics on a sheet of paper - you’re just a part of a corporation. We’re not a part of a corporation here. We are a care about each other law firm environment.” Marshall Martin

foltz-martin-careers-halseyThere is no mold for a lawyer, paralegal or support person at Foltz Martin. We’re proud of our commitment to diversity, but not only age, ethnicity, religious and gender diversity. With every new hire, we want to increase the diversity of thought within our firm.

When we hire an attorney – whether she or he has just graduated from law school or comes from another firm, we’re not looking for someone who thinks exactly like the partner or partners he or she is most likely to work with; how would our clients benefit from such redundancy of thought? And what a boring firm this would be to work for.

We’re looking for innovative thinkers in our lawyers, paralegals and entire support staff.

foltz-martin-meetingWe’re looking for new ideas, to discover new resources, uncover novel solutions to complex problems, and to pioneer time saving systems that will make our work on behalf of our clients even more efficient and cost effective. Increasing our efficiency will benefit our clients, increase our profits and ensure that everyone who works at Foltz Martin is well compensated for the great work they do. Properly channeled diversity of thought and a breadth of knowledge has enabled Foltz Martin to accomplish all of those goals since our founding in 1983 and that is a path we will continue to follow.

It may sound a bit homespun for a major city law firm, but as Marshall Martin states above, we are “a care about each other law firm.” We believe that because legal work can be complicated, time consuming, hard, and intense at times, it’s vital that we enjoy and care about those we work with. We also understand that the quality of our work is directly affected by the quality of the lives we lead outside of work, so we appreciate the importance of family time and leisure activities, and the benefit that time away from the office can have on our effectiveness.

foltz-martin-careers-paralegalAs partner Halsey Knapp puts it, “I tell our young associates, ‘You need to work into your routine some form of physical exercise or leisure activity; it’ll help you deal with the stress and will help you be creative.’  That’s when I find my greatest moments of inspiration when I’m trying to find the right analogy, the right words, the right approach, or analysis, or tactic. I generally find it not in the office, but somewhere else.”

At Foltz Martin we believe that diversity of thought, caring about those you work with, and your quality of life, will all help to ensure that you are passionate about your work on behalf of our clients and our firm. And we know that for us, those ingredients have made our lives and our work, rich and fulfilling.

Our Summer Associates Program:

The Foltz Martin summer associate program provides one or two exceptional law students the opportunity to work, learn, and enjoy the experience that our unique mixture of world-class legal expertise and boutique firm atmosphere provides. We focus on candidates from the University of Georgia and Emory University schools of law, although we do accept resumes from candidates nationwide.

Our summer program is intended to be a substantive, pleasurable learning experience for the summer associate and an opportunity for the Foltz Martin partners to evaluate his or her potential as a practitioner.

Our summer associates work on assignments coming from practice groups such as Commercial Real Estate: Retail & Office, and Leasing, Construction Law: Litigation, Arbitration and General Counsel, Trademarks & Copyright, Complex Commercial Litigation, Corporate Finance & Corporate Law, Employment Law, Asset Protection, Loan Workouts & Bankruptcy.

A Foltz Martin associate attorney manages the workload of each summer associate to ensure the experience is similar to what one could expect as a junior associate. Our summer associates have the opportunity to work side by side with our attorneys on client matters, as well as observing closings, hearings, client meetings, negotiation sessions, depositions and trials whenever possible.

  • Summer associates regularly receive informal feedback from the attorneys with whom they work throughout the summer and a formal review at the end of the program. Summer associates work with as many partners and associates as possible.
  • Summer associates are also invited to enjoy lunches, happy hours and dinners and other informal activities with individual attorneys.
  • Students are welcome to split their summers with other firms provided they spend at least six weeks at Foltz Martin.

If you are interested in a summer associate position, please contact our office administrator, Kellie Claflin.

Thank you for your interest in our summer program. We look forward to hearing from you.
